This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
