Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
